Hello Rattler Nation!
We had a fantastic first week seeing your outstanding students in their classes. This morning, we had a Prinicpal's Coffee, so we interacted with parents as well. If you missed Prinicpal's Coffee, you can find the presentation HERE. Please join us for our next one on September 6th; the link is on the school calendar. We also have an Open House on Thursday, and the schedule is under the calendar section.
9th Grade Student Meeting: Mrs. Skinner (9th-grade counselor), Mr. Willis (9th grade Associate Principal and I met all ninth graders for a presentation on who we are and some reminders. They were AWESOME! Here is the presentation if you want to take a look:
Our first Football game is below in the Athletics Section. All games will be under the Athletics Section starting next week. Please don't only attend football. We have other excellent sports going on.
McDonald's and the Square--
There are usually two random days in which I go into the square to support businesses, monitor things, and build relationships with students. Many are MS Students, which is incredible because when they get to CHHS, they say, "Oh, I know you!"
However, there are a few things I've learned over the years.
There is nothing good going on after school in the square. Businesses call and ask for my support, which I am more than happy to give. Every time something goes on there after school or on weekends, it is on social media with a picture and an immediate designation that these are CHHS students. Many times, the youth in the photos are NOT CHHS students. Middle schools, other high schools nearby, and private charter schools are all in the area.
Here is another observation over the last few years I have been doing this:
If there is to be a fight (planned or unplanned), it will either be behind Smart and Final or at McDonald's. McDonald's and I have an excellent relationship, but things are out of hand every year until I basically start going every day. Please avoid letting your children go there as fighting, disruption, and worse occur. Little children are watching all of this. Also, there is always a video, and for safety and no police activity, we ask you to tell the student to come home or go to a friend's house.
Parking for Parents and Students:
Parking for parents and students is the following:
Parents can park along the 1000 building at the front of the school.
Students park in the South Lot and have to have a parking permit. See Mr. Liew if you need one.
******Please do not park in the parking spaces in the immediate front of the school. All of those spots are for office staff and need to be accessed throughout the school day as staff go in and out to events and meetings. Also, we need immediate access to our vehicles for emergencies for students off campus. When you park in our spots, we need to park on the island in the middle, and we do not want to do that. *****

5-STAR Students--Passes around school---WHAT IS THIS????
CHHS uses an electronic pass system called 5 Star. Many high schools, like Scripps, also use it. Here is the information you need to know about it!
What is 5 Star?
"5-Star Students is a unique, web-based platform available to help educators and administrators track and drive student involvement in school activities and events. 5-Star Students provides viable solutions to keep track of involvement using web, mobile, and barcode scanning technologies. With 5 Star, schools can increase and manage student engagement through point incentives and rewards."
What does this mean for students right now?
Many positive tools are available in the 5-Star toolbox. Since this is new to our learning community, we are taking baby steps. Right now, all we are using 5 Star for is to issue and track hall passes. In the old days, a teacher would write a paper hall pass and send a student on their way. Now, a teacher will assign a pass in 5 Star. All the student needs is a student ID number or last name. Once a pass is assigned, we can see which students are out on a pass, how long they’ve been out for, and where they are heading. This information can be beneficial in the case of an emergency.
Does my child need to have access to a cell phone or app?
ABSOLUTELY NOT. All the benefits and functions of 5 Star Students are available to students without them ever having to touch an app or technology. All a student needs is an ID number or a last name.
What about ID Cards
If your student does have access to a cell phone, and you allow it, they can download the 5 Star Students app on the Apple or Google store. Once they do that, there is a simple login process, and they will have access to their virtual ID card. Again, they don't need the app or the virtual ID card. Their card on the app looks like this below: It has their picture and name (this is our Dean), and then as they pay for things such as an ASB card, or have community college classes, etc, they get icons. It's pretty awesome! We can also use it for short reminders and voting on things like the ASB president.
Athletic: ALL ATHLETIC INFORMATION--PLEASE GO TO https://chrattlers.com/.
Athletics is a very complex program—it's like running a separate school. While I can highlight a few things here, you must check that website daily and contact the proper coaches. This blog highlights sporting events with pictures and celebrations but doesn't get into the operations of athletics. Please bookmark that site so you have it. CHHS has one of the most extensive programs in the county and state. We post an athletic weekly every week right here, and it is ONLY for home games. It looks like this:
Our first football game is this upcoming Friday against Santana:
Here's the route, and when in doubt, follow the masses!
