Hello Rattler Nation!
This week was very busy! We had many athletic events, so we are back in full swing. Students seem thrilled to be back, and teachers report things are going well. Foundation had an amazing Bocce Ball Tournament and it was so great to spend the Saturday before school having fun and raising money for our students: see the picture above. We have Principal's Coffee this upcoming Friday, and the information is below and on the website. We look forward to seeing you.
Minimum Day:
Our first Minimum Day is September 22, 2023. Please arrange proper pickup. School starts at the same time and ends at 1:30 pm. Students must be picked up promptly as all staff will be in a Professional Development. Thank you!
Schedule Changes:
The beginning of the school year is extremely busy in the counseling office. Counselors goal is to respond as soon as possible but in the meantime, there may be additional ways to address your inquiry:
If you are emailing regarding a schedule change, please complete this form so counselors can review your courses and attempt to accommodate your request. Counselors will ONLY review requests from this form.
PLEASE NOTE: Student class schedules are not changed except for the following reasons:
- A scheduling error i.e., missing a class period, enrolled in a course that’s already been passed with a C or higher, or two classes in the same period.
- Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) that necessitates a change.
We do not make schedule changes to switch teachers and/or periods. Additionally, students @stu.sandi.net email is the most efficient way to communicate with students to avoid them missing academic instruction so please check your student email regularly and/or remind your student to check it regularly.
Want to help us keep CHHS a fantastic place to be? There are three ways for you AND your student! Nominations are being taken now.
Nominations:
1. Foundation: Parent Group focused on fundraising for our students! Even if you can't donate your time, you can donate by joining as a member. Click here: https://canyonhillsfoundation.org/

If you are on another committee, we politely ask that you allow others to participate. Click here to nominate! (self or others)

5-STAR Students--Passes around school---WHAT IS THIS????
CHHS uses an electronic pass system called 5 Star. Many HS's like Scripps use it as well. Here is the information you need to know about it!
What is 5 Star?
"5-Star Students is a unique, web-based platform available to help educators and administrators track and drive student involvement in school activities and events. 5-Star Students provides viable solutions to keep track of involvement using web, mobile, and barcode scanning technologies. With 5 Star, schools can increase and manage student engagement through point incentives and rewards."
What does this mean for students right now?
Many positive tools are available in the 5-Star toolbox. Since this is new to our learning community, we are taking baby steps. Right now, all we are using 5 Star for is to issue and track hall passes. In the old days, a teacher would write a paper hall pass and send a student on their way. Now, a teacher will assign a pass in 5 Star. All the student needs is a student ID number or last name. Once a pass is assigned, we can see which students are out on a pass, how long they’ve been out for, and where they are heading. This information can be really helpful in the case of an emergency.
Does my child need to have access to a cell phone or app?
ABSOLUTELY NOT. All the benefits and functions of 5 Star Students are available to students without them ever having to touch an app or technology. All a student needs is an ID number or a last name.
What about ID Cards
Physical ID cards will be delivered to your students within the next week. If your student does have access to a cell phone, and you allow it, they can download the 5 Star Students app on the Apple or Google store. Once they do that, there is a simple login process, and they will have access to their virtual ID card. Again, they don't need the app or the virtual ID card.
ID Card Pictures
If your child has not taken their ID card picture, that’s okay. Passes were given out to students today to have their makeup pictures taken. If, for some reason, your child didn’t receive a pass or they weren’t in school, there will be another makeup picture day on September 20. If they miss that day, they can have their ID card picture taken in the finance office.

Calendar:
Mark Your Calendars:
Open House: September 28th, 2023
The Homecoming Dance is September 30th 2023
Athletic: ALL ATHLETIC INFORMATION--PLEASE GO TO https://chrattlers.com/. All athletic packets can be uploaded and handed in this way. You do not need to come in and drop them off.
Athletics is a very complex program. It's like running a whole separate school. While I can highlight a few things here, you must check that website daily and reach out to the proper coaches. This blog highlights sporting events with pictures and celebrations but doesn't get into the operations of athletics. Please bookmark that site, so you have it. CHHS has one of the most extensive programs in the county and state.
CHHS: There is a once-a-month short day on some months--see below for the schedule. The first one is September 22, 2023.
Make-Up Picture Day and SENIOR PORTRAITS
Makeup (for student IDs and staff photographs is FRIDAY, August 25th, 2023)--we don't do retakes.
SENIOR PORTRAITS SIGN UP HERE: https://www.studio-94-photography.com/high-school-sessions/canyon-hills-high-school/chhs-class-of-2024/
Principal's Coffee: What is this? This is an hour and a half with my whole team, including me, where we talk monthly about all things CHHS, and then we stay and answer any questions, rumors, concerns, anxiety, or celebrations you have! We are here for you! Mark your calendars! This meeting is for currently attending students' parents only, please.
The link is located on the school calendar and we will see you then!
Counselors:
Counselors are here to help you! Your students ask to see their counselor by going to the CHHS website and clicking on the "Counseling Tab"-then, they click on their counselor to fill out the form. Counselors will then call them to the office. The days when I was in high school, you went to the Counseling Office and waited around are done. This is much more streamlined today. However, in emergencies, you ABSOLUTELY can just come on in. Want to pop in and ask a question during the passing period...of course! Here's what the page looks like:
