Week one was a huge success. In past years (10 years at least) the theater would be full of students without schedules or those with scheduling issues. Due to the new link for schedule requests, combined with a new master schedule program we had approx. 20 students without a schedule and less than 100 schedule change requests; most were not changes that were needed (not gross errors). In regards to instruction, our teachers are starting strong with creating rigorous educational environments worthy of your students.

Volunteers Needed!
We are looking for members of the community who would be interested in serving on the four main boards for the school. Meetings are once a month right after school.
Governance: This is the board where instructional issues are discussed and school-wide policies are researched and developed. We need 3 parents/community members. We also have subcommittees we delegate as we try to find fast solutions to issues related to instruction. An example is a new school wide grading and citizenship policy. All teachers should have this is in their syllabi. This came about from a vision the administration had about creating equitable outcomes for students regardless of teacher or course. This was a huge step. See below:
School Site Council: This is the board in which we discuss monies and how they are allocated. I usually bring forward issues from Governance for funding ideas and then as we go through the budget process we discuss how to allocate monies. Example: Do we want a full time Nurse? Health Tech? Counselor? Believe it or not we have to fund these things separately at times...we may have to at times fund extra teachers to lower class size. We need 3 parents for this committee. Please email Nicholas Willis at nwillis@sandi.net; if we have more than 3 we will have a ballot.
Graduation Committee: This is the committee that is going to create a policy on how we will recognize students for their many accomplishments, not just in the area of academic distinction. SHS is moving to a more collegiate-like graduation and we want a policy that is in collaboration with the community. We need 3 parents. Please email Joe Schmidt if interested at jschmidt@sandi.net. If we have more than 3 we will have a ballot. This does not need to be parents of senior students.
Culture and Climate Committee: This committee is geared towards positive culture and climate on campus. Positive culture and climate is key and we want to make sure we are significantly making an effort in this category to take us from good to great. We need 2 parents. Please email Elizabeth Ward if interested at eward@sandi.net. If we have more than 2 we will have a ballot.
Names will not be taken after Thursday September 5th, 2019, so sign up now, please. We need your voice.

ACE Mentoring:
A few reminders based on observations this week:
1. We do have a dress code. Please refer to our website. It's the most progressive one in the district and it is gender neutral. However, tube tops and midriff tops are not allowed.
2. Cell phone use is not allowed in class and phones need to be put away. They should not be out on the desk. Students need to be engaged in the lesson and teachers need to have engaging lessons. Please help me raise the bar for engaging lessons by talking to your child about paying attention in class and putting the phone away. If they are taken, you are going to have to come get them and we do not want to inconvenience you.
3. Parking. Students have a lot and staff has one. Staff has permits so it's going to be obvious if your student is parking there and we don't want you to get a ticket.
We hope everyone had an amazing first week of the 2019-2020 school year. We are so excited to work with all of our students and their families this year.
Thank you so much!
