Happy Saturday Serra High!
This past week we had the opportunity to spend time with the people we care care about all while being safe during this pandemic. I hope you and your students had some much needed rest. We had a lot of really amazing thing happen the week leading up to break.
Above is Nyah Clovis, who is in Mr. Snedden's class (he teaches AP Literature and AP US History--you aren't going to find a funnier guy and amazing teacher!--tell your students to take his courses!) Nyah Clovis won second place in the Voice of Democracy VFW Audio Essay Contest. Students had to write and record an essay, 3-5 minutes in length, on the prompt: "Is This the Country the Founders Envisioned?" Nyah's essay earned her $200! She got paid to do her homework!!!!! Thank you to the VFW Post 5985!
Also we had a guest speaker in Ms. Amos' (another amazing teacher--Freshman English and AP Language) English Classes. The students were joined by Phuc Tran from Maine, the author of Sigh, Gone: A Misfit's Memoirs of Great Books, Punk Rock, and the Fight to Fit In. Students analyzed an excerpt from his book and then Mr. Tran led them in a riveting and energetic discussion about how languages and cultures shape our identities.
After the discussion one student wrote that they were inspired to view the purpose of their education as "igniting the fire that will light my way through life," and Mr. Tran wrote "I am so impressed by your students---such great questions. Please let them know how whipsmart I thought they were. We were impressed as well!!!!
