Reopening, Graduation and more!

Happy Sunday Serra High!

We had a very interesting week this past week. We have been extremely busy getting ready for reopening. Details will be coming soon as the teachers and the district reached an agreement today. Serra High needs a few days to review. In addition to that, I have been doing facilities tours to make sure that when we reopen we are in compliance with the district and the state with all the protocols we must adhere to. Lastly, the Board of Education voted to change the name of Junipero Serra High School to Canyon Hills High School. This change will take place for the following 2021-2022 school year. We thank them for reviewing the data we providing them and making a decision. We will also be red and black and our mascot will be the rattlesnakes. If you missed the presentation you can view it here:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NzvTAu0iuMw Please scroll to the 4:10:01 mark as it was quite an honor to be with the Tribal Leaders presenting our data. You can review the 70 page document as well on San Diego Unified Board Docs.

Graduation:

I'm getting lots of questions regarding information on graduation. I have been working overtime in order to accomplish several things that I think are important and that in consultation the senior class they also agree are important.

  1. A way for ALL the seniors to graduate in one ceremony not several.

  2. A way for more people than just parents be there.......every child would be allowed 2 people if we do on campus and we would have several graduations in a day. I'm trying to figure out a way to get graduation off site so we can have more than just 2 per students. PLEASE do not tell your entire family and friends to fly into San Diego to attend your students graduation. You will NOT be allowed to bring everyone you want as in years past. I'm already getting alumni telling me they are coming and I'm telling them not to get their hopes up. No matter what we end up doing for the graduation there will be a set number of tickets per family.

  3. Jostens--You will be able to get cap and gowns etc all at Serra so don't worry about that!

  4. Do not assume the date. There is a window of days we are allowed and we have to work with a variety of issues. We usually have it the day before the last day of school. This may not be the case this year.

I hope that helps slightly. I believe my efforts to get a venue off campus will pay off and be the best it can given the circumstances. Stay tuned!

Counseling:

This week Progress 3, D and F letters were mailed home. We hope that these notifications motivate our students to reach out for help. There is still enough time for students to pick up their grades if they have not done so already. Pease be mindful that Distance Learning grades are permanent and any failed grades will need to be remediated. We highly encourage parents and students to reach out their teachers for feedback and recommendations on how grades can be improved. Attending teacher’s office hours and creating study groups can go a very long way. As always, your counseling team is here to support you with any of your needs. Please reach out to us if you need help.

We will be sending summer school information as soon as we get more information from our district office.

Attention Class of 2021, If you are interested in attending community college in the Fall there are a few resources available to assist you with your application and the California Promise Program application. First, our College Readiness Coach from Cal-Soap, Patrick Miencharoen is available to meet with you one-on-one to help you with your community college applications (Miramar, City, Mesa, Grossmont, Cuyamaca, Southwestern, etc.) and assist you with your Promise Program application. Patrick can be contacted at pmiencha@ucsd.edu and all you need to do to start meeting with him is to complete this form: https://ucsd.mylacai.com/apply.php Additionally, The Miramar College Outreach and School Relations department will be hosting Pre-Enrollment Workshops for all high school seniors interested in attending Miramar College this upcoming Fall 2021 term. These workshops will provide seniors with the necessary information to become Miramar College students and serve to provide additional guidance for our service area students. Very similar to a college orientation, during these sessions, counselors provide a college overview, requirements, and transfer information to ensure students are ready to begin their academic journey at Miramar College. Students will complete steps toward their matriculation process to make sure they receive a registration appointment for course enrollment and priority registration. Students only need to attend one Pre-Enrollment Workshop. The next workshops are: March 25th at 1:30 PM https://tinyurl.com/9rkpw2 April 14th at 1:30 PM https://tinyurl.com/bt3wn428

Leadership Opportunity for Boys

It is that time of year again where we need to submit three (3) referrals of male high school juniors from Serra High School to interview and select as delegates for The American Legion sponsored California Boys State.

Due to the pandemic last spring, our Boys State 2020 program session was cancelled for the first time since World War II. With the continued Pandemic measures being instituted into 2021, a decision has been made to institute a “Virtual” Boys State in 2021. Details of this program will be forthcoming, but current planning will be for a single virtual program for approximately 1000 boys as in previous years from June 19-25. Complete details of how the program will be accomplished will be communicated after the selection.

This program has been attended by high school boys since 1937. The American Legion believes that our American government can survive only with an educated populace by planting our seeds for the future utilizing one of many Americanism programs The American Legions hosts each year. By teaching youths to understand and appreciate our democratic republic, America can remain strong and ensure our freedom for future generations to come.

Boys State is a unique summertime educational program for high school JUNIORS with a focus on participation and gaining personal experience in electing a “Model State Government, complete with governmental bodies and elected public officials.” It is designed to mirror the structure and operation of the California State government, providing practical training in:

Leadership ~ Citizenship ~ Duty ~ Justice ~ Freedom ~ Democracy

State and Local Governmental ~ Operation & Responsibilities ~

Working in and with Political Organizations

Students interested must meet the following criteria:

  1. Successfully completed or will complete his junior year.

  2. Be a student in good standing.

  3. Have at least one more semester of high school remaining (previous Boys State attendees NOT eligible).

  4. Prefer students with an interest in government, law, and/or politics.

  5. Individuals with very high character, leadership qualities, good citizenship, intelligence, and a capacity for service to his fellow man.

  6. Students with a desire to apply to any of the Service Academies)

If you are interested in being considered for Boys State, please email me a paragraph stating why you are a good candidate by no later than 3/19/21.
