Happy FRIDAY Serra High!
This past week has been very busy. We have been supporting teachers and students with the start of classes for Semester 2 and doing textbook return. We also are gearing up for Athletics to start. This upcoming Friday is Principals Coffee and the link is on the SHS website. Lastly, I have been told that our name, mascot, and color change will be going to the BOE sometime this month! So exciting!
Lastly, many of you have been calling asking "Where is my report card I haven't received it in the mail?"--We didn't mail them. Please go to the Parent Portal (https://serrahighschool.wixsite.com/wellness/parent-portal ) you can view the report card; any questions please contact your child's teacher.
****Please read the blog in its entirety including the Booster Section in order to get more involved in things at Serra! Class of 2024 has an announcement at the end of this blog and you don't want to miss it****
Few Items to Take Note of:
Only 1/3 of the school returned their books. We need you to return them. I have asked my entire office staff to come and help on Monday and Tuesday because if you haven't returned your books, you need to do so as it is affecting another child. Please be courteous. My biggest concerns are freshman class and senior class (Seniors---you HAVE to turn in books to graduate--its a requirement just like it is every year for every senior).Come Fall 2021 (this upcoming Fall) if you have not returned textbooks then I wont be able to issue them to you.
There are no schedule changes. Please see the reasoning behind this under Counseling. We as a team are here to support you through your current courses.
3. Did you know that Serra High has a new phone number???? Our phones were all updated over the last few weeks. The new number is 619-605-8100. Please write this down to avoid frustrations later.
Book Return and Distribution: Please return any books you have from any year! So many books are outstanding and you need to return to be clear for when you graduate and we need them to give to others!

Here is our cover!
Yes we are having one! and Yes it is going to be robust with pictures etc. Yearbook class starts next week and we are excited.
Here are some details:
Our theme for the yearbook this year is "Our Alternate Reality." While sports is usually our biggest section and will be starting we are excited and also we are taking a fresh look at a variety of topics to explore with athletes. We'll have the traditional "mug shots" section using the selfie portraits, as well as getting senior portraits in there as well. (Unfortunately, Prestige Portraits has been closed since November, but just recently reopened, so we hope those students that haven't had their senior portraits done can call and make an appointment. (858) 693-9197
This means I won't be sending the book in for publication until the first week in June, and distribution won't be until August. I understand that is outside of the norm, but to produce the best possible book, I'm going to have to go with a summer distribution rather than our usual June distribution. I recommend that if graduating seniors order their copy online, they should pay the extra $7 to $8 to have the publisher ship the book directly to them.

DISTRICT FINANCES/FUNDING:
The District Advisory Council wants to know what your priorities are for funding for the next school year. They ask parents to fill out a survey letting them know. Please fill this out at your leisure.
Athletics:
Wondering whats going on with school reopening and sports? Here is an update:

Counseling:
Our schedule change policy remains the same, we don’t do schedule changes unless they are gross errors. Serra’s counseling team is reviewing all requests. Please be mindful that we are very limited in course offerings, since we have gone down from a 6 period day to a 3 period day. All courses offered were based on student’s request. The intention of a 3 period day is to decrease the workload for students, thus providing more time for students to be successful in the courses they have selected. If a student is already experiencing challenges in a class, we recommend students work with their teachers and take advantage of office hours. We thank you for the understanding.
Message from Patrick Miencharoen, Serra’s CalSoap Rep
Hello! My name is Patrick Miencharoen. I am Serra High's Cal-SOAP representative. In case you haven't heard of us before, Cal-SOAP is a state-run organization under the California Student Aid Commission (CSAC) that aims to assist high school seniors in completing financial aid and college applications, among other things. If you would like to get assistance in completing the FAFSA/Dream Act application please contact me (or have your child contact me) as soon as possible at pmiencha@ucsd.edu. Due to the finicky nature of the SDUSD email firewall, you or your child will need to email me from a non-SDUSD-issued email. Also, before I am allowed to work with your child, please have them complete this very short survey: https://ucsd.mylacai.com/apply.php. Application deadline is March 2nd. Thank you.Attention Senior planning to attend a community college next year:

Senior Boosters:
If you have driven on Santo past Serra, you may have noticed the banners that we hung supporting our Serra Seniors! We are inviting parents, families, and the community to get creative and make posters to add to the fence! Individual families (no gatherings please) can put up posters or Boosters members will come pick up your poster and hang it up! Laminated posters or vinyl banners (1DayBanner.com) are encouraged, so that they will endure the elements. Let's show our seniors we are rooting for them as they come into the home stretch of high school! Email serra2021boosters@gmail.com<mailto:serra2021boosters@gmail.com> if you have questions or would like your poster put up.
The Seniors can also look forward to a gift from the Boosters when they drop off and pick up their textbooks this next week: face masks with "Class of 2021" printed on the side and "Serra Senior" yard signs for families to proudly put on display!
