Dear Parents--- We are finishing up scheduling students. Our phones are still being worked on by the higher ups and apparently other school are posting events on their calendars that are showing up on ours and our events on theirs. We are looking for a calendar platform to take back our communication so it is not district driven as clearly it has flaws. IN THE KNOW!!!!
1. Our Open House is on September 12, 2018 from 5:00-7:30pm. Please see this agenda for details. PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU USE POWERSCHOOL FOR YOUR CHILDS SCHEDULE.
2. WELCOME BACK DANCE--Our Dance is being postponed due to unforeseen issues. We deeply apologize, have announced this and left messages with those affected. We will reschedule at some point. It was this Saturday.
3. PTO Meeting: The Parent/Teacher Association is in need of members. This group gets together and raises money for morale on campus and have done amazing things like revamp the teachers lounge. The meeting is September 18 at 6:30 in the Media Center.
4. PSAT--PLEASE READ: Attention Freshmen, Sophomore and Junior Parents: ThePSAT will be given on Serra’s campus on October 10, 2018. If you are interested in having your student take the PSAT, the deadline to register is September 7, 2018. Students must bring their PSAT payment in the form of cash or check (payable to Serra High School) by this deadline. Freshman will pay $11 and Juniors, $16. Payment should be given to the Finance Office either at lunch or after school and your student’s name will be added to the PSAT list of test takers. Note: The district pays for all 10th graders to take this PSAT and there is no fee for 10th grade ONLY nor do they have to sign up as they will take this test in their English classes. More details provided as the test gets closer.6. Make Up Pictures: October 2, 2018 Students will be able to take make up pictures. So put your best outfit on and get ready to smile.
And now you know!!!!
INSTRUCTION:
Did you know that SHS has five instructional goals in five years? ITS TRUE! Last year we focused on engagement in the classroom. This year, based on data we collected last year, we are moving into our next focus which is assessment. What does that mean....It means a lot! Take a look at this:
Focus Area - Assessing Students for Learning, Standard 5 2018-2019 School Year
In our first Wednesday meeting staff engaged with various data: all about Serra. Here is a summary of the beginning of our work:
5.1 Applying knowledge of the purposes, characteristics, and uses of different types of assessments
What does this look like in classrooms from an Administration Standpoint:
Teachers use a variety of summative and formative assessments.
Grading policies on syllabi have a variety of ways to assess student learning.
Teachers have a specific learning outcome that can be measured by assessments.
Students are aware of the ways they will be assessed in the class.
What does this look like from a Teacher Standpoint:
As teachers develop, they may ask, “How do I…” or “Why do I…”
• become knowledgeable of the different types of assessments--and their uses, benefits, and limitations--that I draw on to inform my instruction?
• select assessment strategies and instruments appropriate to the learning outcomes being evaluated?
• use my knowledge of assessment concepts such as validity, reliability, and bias to choose assessments appropriate to my students?
• design grading practices that draw on multiple sources of information and reflect student learning?
In addition as a staff we will be engaging in professional reading. The following books have been chosen as they align to Assessments and various topics within the subject area. The authors are all well respected professors right here in San Diego at SDSU.
We look forward to this journey of improving our practice.
Athletics: A great way to spend your evenings is with SHS Athletics and our amazing events. There are so many that we have our own website devoted to just this topic. Please reference this link which can also be found on our webpage.

Nominations: Besides Foundation members we need the following as well. If you would like to volunteer we would highly appreciate it as we cannot function without these groups and they have to have community members on them:
1. School Site Council (SSC): This group determines how money in Title 1 and LCFF are spent (money for things that support ALL students. In addition, they have other responsibilities as well. We need 1 parents and 1 students.
2. Governance: This group discusses and gives advice to the Principal on instructional issues and policies on campus. We need 2 parents and 1 student (pretty please)!
For any volunteers and or nominations, please contact the principal Dr. Erica Renfree at erenfree@sandi.net.
