Happy Sunday Serra High!
We had a great week this past week with new information regarding reopening--for me and my staff and a BLOG will be coming out on Friday of Spring Break giving just the top 5 things you need to know and access to make it easy for you! It is going to be easy and we will be everywhere around campus supporting your students--especially those who are stepping on campus for the first time!!!!!
In addition to working on reopening, I was able to attend many athletic games including volleyball, football, baseball---from afar as it was raining and basketball practice. It was so great to see our students out there! Here are some pictures:

Reopening:
Survey results for reopening are in and we are expecting 2/3 of the students returning. What does that mean for your child and their classes? It means currently except for PE and some other classes there will be around 12 kids on average in each class. Serra has prepped for 18 and so if you made an error in your survey it is ok you can show up and we will give you a seat as we already planned for it.
Many of you have contacted us asking for another day or time. I rarely say this and it actually upsets me to do so but the answer is no. All these guidelines are very serious including not mixing students.
This reopening is by far the most complex puzzle of my career. We have done the math for every scenario and every period of every class. It only works this way.
FAQ's for Reopening can be found by clicking below: Please remember this is a process and I only have so many answers at this time. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1KEDGWOlJs5LVItGlqrdJtkcXmURlQ1bpyi8DP892Px4/edit?usp=sharing
The school is incredibly safe with this plan and we feel confident in it. As things develop it can become fluid, but to open school safely we are formatted in a way to keep everyone safe.

Serra High has secured Petco Park for Graduation. The venue allowed me to meet the following goals I had (1-3). I do not have a date yet. You will get Im hoping 4 seats and not 2 as you would of had at Serra. I really wanted the kids to graduate as one class and I'm glad the work paid off for them.
THE DATE HAS NOT BEEN DETERMINED BUT WILL IN THE NEXT 2 WEEKS I BELIEVE.

Attention Class of 2021, If you are interested in attending community college in the Fall there are a few resources available to assist you with your application and the California Promise Program application. First, our College Readiness Coach from Cal-Soap, Patrick Miencharoen is available to meet with you one-on-one to help you with your community college applications (Miramar, City, Mesa, Grossmont, Cuyamaca, Southwestern, etc.) and assist you with your Promise Program application. Patrick can be contacted at pmiencha@ucsd.edu and all you need to do to start meeting with him is to complete this form: https://ucsd.mylacai.com/apply.php Additionally, The Miramar College Outreach and School Relations department will be hosting Pre-Enrollment Workshops for all high school seniors interested in attending Miramar College this upcoming Fall 2021 term. These workshops will provide seniors with the necessary information to become Miramar College students and serve to provide additional guidance for our service area students. Very similar to a college orientation, during these sessions, counselors provide a college overview, requirements, and transfer information to ensure students are ready to begin their academic journey at Miramar College. Students will complete steps toward their matriculation process to make sure they receive a registration appointment for course enrollment and priority registration. Students only need to attend one Pre-Enrollment Workshop. The next workshops are: April 14th at 1:30 PM https://tinyurl.com/bt3wn428
Announcing the 2021
Kiwanis Foundation of Tierrasanta Scholarships
The Kiwanis Foundation of Tierrasanta is pleased to announce that it will again be awarding the Vernon D. Bowman, Thomas G. Cherniss and George V. Paluso Scholarships at the end of the 2021 school year to graduating seniors of Serra High School. These scholarships are awarded annually to students who best exemplify Kiwanis ideals that were fostered by these three respected Kiwanis Club members and residents of Tierrasanta. Scholarships are based on a student’s demonstration of academic success, a strong record of community service, leadership and altruistic devotion to the welfare of fellow students. In addition to the general criteria, athletic participation and leadership is a prerequisite for the Paluso scholarship.
Applicants must be 2021 graduating seniors from Serra High School who will be pursuing an associate or bachelor level degree, or higher education that will qualify the applicant for entry into a business, profession or trade. Scholarship applications will be reviewed by a scholarship committee of the Kiwanis Foundation of Tierrasanta, where the selections will be made.
Selections for scholarship awards will be based upon the depth of community service, participation in Serra High School activities, including athletics (required for the Paluso scholarship), and scholastic achievement. Applicants will be required to:
· document their school and community activities and leadership
· submit an official transcript
· write a reflective essay regarding their activities, and
· submit a letter of recommendation.
Students need only submit one application to be considered for all three scholarships listed below:
· Vernon D. Bowman scholarship: payable in annual installments over four years
· Thomas G. Cherniss scholarship: a one-time scholarship payment
· George V. Paluso scholarship: a one-time scholarship payment
Anticipating that the COVID-19 constraints will be extant for the foreseeable future, the 2021 applications will be available by emailing bobrichards44@gmail.com commencing on March 14, 2021; students will receive an email response that includes the scholarship application packet. Scholarship applications must be returned to the same email address by close of business April 16, 2021.
Leadership Opportunity for Boys
It is that time of year again where we need to submit three (3) referrals of male high school juniors from Serra High School to interview and select as delegates for The American Legion sponsored California Boys State.
Due to the pandemic last spring, our Boys State 2020 program session was cancelled for the first time since World War II. With the continued Pandemic measures being instituted into 2021, a decision has been made to institute a “Virtual” Boys State in 2021. Details of this program will be forthcoming, but current planning will be for a single virtual program for approximately 1000 boys as in previous years from June 19-25. Complete details of how the program will be accomplished will be communicated after the selection.
This program has been attended by high school boys since 1937. The American Legion believes that our American government can survive only with an educated populace by planting our seeds for the future utilizing one of many Americanism programs The American Legions hosts each year. By teaching youths to understand and appreciate our democratic republic, America can remain strong and ensure our freedom for future generations to come.
Boys State is a unique summertime educational program for high school JUNIORS with a focus on participation and gaining personal experience in electing a “Model State Government, complete with governmental bodies and elected public officials.” It is designed to mirror the structure and operation of the California State government, providing practical training in:
Leadership ~ Citizenship ~ Duty ~ Justice ~ Freedom ~ Democracy
State and Local Governmental ~ Operation & Responsibilities ~
Working in and with Political Organizations
Students interested must meet the following criteria:
Successfully completed or will complete his junior year.
Be a student in good standing.
Have at least one more semester of high school remaining (previous Boys State attendees NOT eligible).
Prefer students with an interest in government, law, and/or politics.
Individuals with very high character, leadership qualities, good citizenship, intelligence, and a capacity for service to his fellow man.
Students with a desire to apply to any of the Service Academies)
If you are interested in being considered for Boys State, please email me a paragraph stating why you are a good candidate by no later than 3/19/21.
