Hello Conquistador Nation!
What great week we had! We were in a ton of classrooms and watching instruction. We (Admin and Math Dept.) met with Math guru Patrick Callahan and received Professional Development about Math instruction for SHS! It was very productive and data driven. We have set goals and I'll be updating parents about these goals at Principal's Coffee! One of the things we talked about was the growing push from businesses about skills that are needed in the industry and what they are seeing in interviews of students coming out of college. Check out this graph: Note: It's clear that we (society as a whole) have work we need to do.
Business' rank Critical Thinking/ Reasoning and Applying Knowledge to Real World issues at the top yet say that those areas also are the biggest deficits. In addition, businesses ranked interpersonal skills."
Also SHS students attended the Qualcomm Business' Convention and were super empowered. They met and talked with businesses and businesses presented on what they were looking for. It has resulted in conversations about internships and mentoring programs. Check out what they reported were the top skills needed.
The pathways we offer at Serra focus on communication, critical thinking, and real world connections and applications! We offer Engineering, Video Production, Photography, and BioMedical! We are on our way to growing SHS student to meet the needs of the industry! We are competitive!

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Parents: We have seen a dramatic increase in tardies and absences. You MUST call in and excuse your child or it is unexcused. You can not call a week later. SHS does not hear appeals for Prom and/or Graduation if your child is on LOP or has unexcused absences. That's right. Your child will not attend. If you need to make up tardies and absences your child can go to Saturday School. The next Saturday School is TOMORROW! There are also only 2 in January! Don't wait until the last minute or there won't be enough time to recover your points. We don't want you to not participate in scheduled fun activities. Yes, the whole year counts...not just Semester 2.
AND NOW YOU KNOW!

SAY SAN DIEGO:
Some of our amazing Serra students have been participating in Serra Real Connections' CEOs (Career and Entrepreneurship Opportunities) program. This workforce development project has taken students through soft skills training, presented them with professional and industry experts career path presentations, and finally project based learning. They are just wrapping up their community impact projects.
Over the past 7 weeks industry experts have been mentoring students through a project focused on an a need or issue students identified in the field of study they find interesting. Those fields include, computer science, policy and law and animal health. We will be hosting an exhibition of those projects next Tuesday, 12/18 from 3 pm-4 pm.
