A new building for a new era!

Hello Q's---

Did you know the SHS is going to have a brand new state-of-the-art VAPA building. That's right! New theater, new music rooms, practice areas, classrooms and more! While that project comes after our new 16 classroom building its going to be amazing! Best part about it is that Henry High and Mira Mesa went before us.....so we will make ours better! Please support the arts here at SHS. We have a VAPA pathway and we will be bringing in artists to teach courses in 2020. Kearny High has no band/music and no arts......Do not take our VAPA pathway for granted!!!!! Come support us.

The best time is this weekend for Drama and next Thursday for our Spring Music concert.

Here is the testing schedule for this week:

Also: we have Serra gear! Get it right here! https://squareup.com/store/serrafoundation/ check out the pics!!!! We use these funds in a variety of ways and so we appreciate your support. All proceeds go to the students at SHS!

Class of 2019!

I spent Saturday at Saturday School. We had 200 students there. Thats amazing! If seniors keep coming and don't get any more absences we should have triple what would have been without my email!

I want to thank you for taking me seriously and seeing this as a call to action in an attempt to make the graduation ceremony amazing for you and your students! Please remember the importance of attendance if you have a younger students when the time comes. Why is this this way? Its not my rule! but it is one.......here's the answer:

1. In order to get a grade in a course you must have 60 hours of seat time in a course. Tardies and absences count against this. This is the state of CA, not Serra.

2. If you do not have 60 hours of seat time you can NOT get a grade. You get an NG. If you get an NG in a course you need to graduate then you wont get a diploma.

3. If you get an NG in a course you are taking and its not a class you need to graduate it will affect your GPA. If you drop below a 2.0 you will NOT get a diploma....

4. If you get one D or F senior year and it pulls your GPA down below 2.0 you also get no diploma.

5. California Educational Code states that absence not cleared within 5 days turns into a unexcused absence which affects items 1-4 and in addition you can not in May produce a doctors note for every unexcused absence (especially if its period absences all over the place). We will not be excusing them.....It's against the law.

Lastly, if you child is suffering from a medical condition and is having an issue they are to report to the Nurse's office who should have a copy of the orders and sign a HIPPA so that she may speak to your child's doctor. The nurse goes in and codes the absence from class with a special tag and the child stays in the Nurses office. That is the legal procedure.

WARNING: While my code red 2 weeks ago was about absences and the promotion ceremony please make sure your child is going to end up with a 2.0. Otherwise, you will not even get a diploma let alone be in the ceremony.

I have hired a support person to get Saturday School data in as fast as possible (each day we have it is at least a fulls days work to input!) so you have the most up to date information in these last few weeks.

Let's finish strong!

Also there is a booster meeting: Class of 2021

Class of 2021 Boosters will meet in the Alumni Room at 6:00 on Thursday May 16.

We will be discussing our fundraising thus far, goals and projections for next year.

Did you know that the price of graduation has increased about 10k in the last 3 years. What do you get for that money? More than you can imagine:

1. As many seats as you need: no tickets

2. Air conditioning

3. Every seat is AMAZING!

4. Disability and wheelchair friendly! Not up at the top not able to see.

5. Insane Audio so you can actually hear whats happening

6. I pay an additional 5k for you to park without paying and waiting in line to put your license plate in...blah blah----no fun

From an Administration stand point: they do it all for us: mics, chairs on stage and floor and decor and the list goes on........We have a relationship now so it has become easy for them and us.

What do you get if you graduate on the field:

1. 2-4 tickets: thats it, tickets depend on class size/max capacity in stadium

2. No air conditioning

3. Far away seating and in not the best condition

4. Wheelchairs are at the top: not elderly friendly

5. We will cross our fingers our audio works.

6. Parking issues as we dont have enough at SHS even without construction

Jonn Pisapia, Joey Schmidt, and myself calling all the vendors to rent all the things we need and then setting it all up ourselves: Floor to cover field, lights, stage, chairs, decor, mics, etc

The booster that year will have to help with the set up as well as three people wont be enough and it will probably take a full three days if not more.

The Booster meetings is important so you can prioritize what is important to you as a class. If the price keeps going up I simply can't justify the cost. I have asked the boosters to help off set costs. I am scared of disappointing a class if I say I cant afford it but I need your help! If boosters start now they will be able to offset costs and in addition lower the cost for all senior events so more can go! Don't wait until senior year!----Wanna take a senior trip? You could if you start now! The sky is the limit.

Athletics:

SPRING SPORTS ARE HERE in a week! CHECK MAX PREPS

COUNSELING: PLEASE READ!!!Mark your calendars!

Our counselors would like to let all seniors know that if they know they will be accepting a scholarship, they can pick up a Senior Recognition Form from the counseling office so that they can be recognized at Senior Award Night taking place on June 6th. The forms are due May 30th to Mr. Stewart in the counseling office.

Also: Did you know SHS is one of the top schools to work with the district to provide jobs to teens? We have students making 40 dollars an hour! Love animals? Check these jobs out!
