Happy Friday Serra High!
This past week we had a lot of planning etc over Athletics, adding more students to Appointment Based Services and even more planning for our WASC.
What is WASC?
WASC Stands for Western Accreditation of Schools Committee.
The WASC accreditation process aids institutions in developing and sustaining effective educational programs and assures the educational community, the general public, and other organizations that an accredited institution has met high standards of quality and effectiveness.
Accreditation means that Serra has a comprehensive and rigorous program and therefore the grades we issue, and the diplomas we give, mean something legal and have integrity. It's not just simply a yes or no as it can issue a wide variety of timelines and accreditations. You can have anywhere from a one to six years in between visits (six is the best) and you can have reviews at anytime. Serra had a WASC full term report done the month before I was appointed to principal. It was decided by the committee at that time that they needed to come back to SHS after three years (review) and made clear their desires for what they would like to see at that time. Our WASC was on March16-18 of 2020......we went out on COVID March 13th....so close!
We will now do our review on Wednesday and Thursday this week all day. They will talk to kids, go in classes, speak to staff, speak to parents, and much much more. We are looking forward to showing all the amazing things the students and we have done from before I was principal until now. We have much to celebrate!
What can you do to help? Please encourage your child to have their cameras on on Wednesday and Thursday. We took data on students who had high GPA's and teacher reports and found a direct correlation to those students having cameras on. It makes a difference!
Opportunities: Tierrasanta Village
I recently spoke at this group's meeting all about how amazing Serra High is and they were so impressed they wanted to partner with us. They are a group of 65+ year olds and are super spunky!
They came up with an AMAZING IDEA that promotes community service, and academics, and learning!
The Tierrasanta Village would like to invite Serra students to join their book club reading of the classics! Students, contact Sheila Weiner to join. SheilaWeiner@att.net

CAL-SOAP
Hello! My name is Patrick Miencharoen. I am Serra High's Cal-SOAP representative. In case you haven't heard of us before, Cal-SOAP is a state-run organization under the California Student Aid Commission (CSAC) that aims to assist high school seniors in completing financial aid and college applications, among other things. If you would like to get assistance in completing the FAFSA/Dream Act application please contact me (or have your child contact me) as soon as possible at pmiencha@ucsd.edu. Due to the finicky nature of the SDUSD email firewall, you or your child will need to email me from a non-SDUSD-issued email. Also, before I am allowed to work with your child, please have them complete this very short survey: https://ucsd.mylacai.com/apply.php. Application deadline is March 2nd. Thank you.Attention Senior planning to attend a community college next year:
