Hello Q-Nation!
Happy Friday!
Above, you see our amazing band and color guard students! They are crushing it this week! There is a Colorguard Tournament tomorrow, and our Band has taken some top honors in the district.
"Serra had the honor of hosting the SDUSD Honor Band and Orchestra auditions (for the second year in a row!) back on Tuesday February 11th.
Instrumentalists from every high school in the district are invited to audition for these groups, which are made up of the most dedicated and talented student musicians in our city.
The highest scoring students at these rigorous auditions make up the personnel of these ensembles. These musicians rehearse together a few times in March and then perform on the big stage at Copley Symphony Hall (home of the San Diego Symphony Orchestra) at 3PM on Sunday March 22nd.
This year eight students from Serra High School made it through the auditions to qualify for the ensembles! Please wish them congratulations and consider coming to see them play (admission is free of charge!) on the 22nd.
These students (and their corresponding instruments) are...
10th Grader Chaneol Choi (Violin)
12th Grader Max Tooley (Viola)
10th Grader Kate Chasin (Cello)
12th Grader Emily Chasin (Flute)
11th Grader Emily Jacobson (Flute)
10th Grader Kylie Walstrom (Clarinet)
12th Grader Liam Schoel (Baritone Saxophone)
12th Grader Allie Riley (Percussion)
Congrats to all!

Winter Formal:
Serra's Party On 4th Street was a hit and there were a lot more tickets sold than expected. The club scene was a hit with the students, as they danced the night away. And if they weren’t dancing they were enjoying the dessert bar, that included candy and the opportunity to make s'mores. Overall, there were great reviews of the dance, and it was a fun and successful night for Serra.
We desperately need your help...please!
California Healthy Kids Survey---SDUSD uses this data all the time to talk about what's happening at the school...it needs to be an accurate representation....we have had low completion rate in past years.
The Cal-SCHLS survey system is the most commonly used and reliable school survey, covering topics related to school climate and student resiliency. All schools in our district take this survey. The survey is now open and we would appreciate hearing from you and your student's experience here at Serra High School. Your survey responses will support and guide our efforts and we value your input. The link is below and it only takes a few minutes.
Thank you!
Parent survey: surveys.wested.org/csps/QM234QF. We especially need feedback from 9th and 11th grade parents!
Need Tutoring? The After School Program is BACK!!!!!
Tutoring will start THIS coming Monday after school and then more than tutoring will begin as soon as we are ready. We are providing tutoring to start but stay tuned for the rest. Note: Hours are different as well.
Did you know we have SHS gear?! Check it out! Proceeds go to our Serra Foundation....please go to http://serrafoundation.org/ to order.

Counseling:
SAVE THE DATE!
Are you planning on enrolling in college courses for next year?? If so, there is a mandatory meeting that you and a parent must attend in order to be eligible to take a college course starting in Fall 2020/Spring 2021. Due to the high number of students requesting college courses we have arranged to host two separate meeting nights. Students with Last names A-L must attend March 16; students with last names M-Z must attend March 18. Both meetings will be held in the Media Center and are scheduled to begin at 6:00pm. If you are not able to attend on your scheduled date you can attend on the other night. ALL STUDENTS AND PARENT MUST ATTEND, EVEN IF YOU ALREADY ATTENDED A MEETING LAST YEAR. Girls Lacrosse has games...only parent attendance is needed due to game.
This is very Important!
Would you like to get your first year or possibly two years of community college tuition paid for, and be eligible for scholarships or get some financial assistance to help you with your college tuition?? Then you must submit your FAFSA/Dream Act application no later than March 2. The sooner you submit your application, the better chances you have of getting more money in your pocket!!!!The state of California is paying for your first year of community college tuition through the Promise Scholarship. In order to be eligible for the Promise Scholarship you must submit a FAFSA Application/Dream Act.
Job Opportunities: SHS will be posting and highlighting job opportunities for students. We even sign work permits as well. You can always find jobs for students on this district website which is being updated regularly. https://storage.googleapis.com/job-board/index.html
