School Awards, Senior Checklist, and Prom!!!

Good Afternoon Rattler Nation,

We had a great week with the play and also athletics. Students edited the Lip Dub and it is coming soon. Seniors have a mandatory checklist to complete including information for Senior Awards--please make sure you as a parent review this so you don't miss anything. Save the Date for our Bocce Tournament, and we are look forward to Prom in a a week at the Westin. It is sure to be a fun night.

NEW PHONE NUMBER: Our school phone number changed over last summer and was in the blog for a while. The phone company has stopped rerouting calls from the old number and therefore you need to make sure you definitely have the correct number. It is right on our website BUT not on the internet. Our number is 619.605.8100 please put this in your list of contacts and delete the other number.

Armed Forces Day: ROTC Brigade and TTown Parade: Next Saturday!

I will be attending the ROTC Brigade the morning of Prom and Ms. Ward and Mr. Willis will be in the TTown parade. I have done the parade every year since I've been here and I need to show some love to our ROTC students since its Armed Forces Day as well!

Awards for CHHS!

CHHS has been so lucky this year as we have had many people/organizations throughout the state celebrating the work done here. Everything from academics, to programs, our dress code, and the one above to name a few. CHHS was recently bestowed with the No Place for Hate School from the Anti-Defamation League. It is quite an honor and recognizes our school as a place that is inclusive for students based on a varsity of parameters. We are so grateful for this and will continue our work to be the very best we can for all our students.

Community Advisory Committee on Special Education Award!

Two of our amazing staff members won and are being celebrated at our CAC Awards. Nurse Ashley and Carlos Gaines our Building Site Supervisor over all our custodial crew won this award due to the outpouring of accolades for their work with our Students with Disabilities.

Purple Star Award

We also received the Purple Star award from the State of California. It was a huge surprise and honor. Several Principals in this cluster were celebrated. Gina Camacho-McGrath from Miller elementary and myself were recognized at our Board of Education Meeting. We have always had an amazing support system in our Board of Education and it was so nice to be recognized. As many of you know I was a military child as my father served 37 years. I know how hard it can be for some of our families and we are here to support you.

Club Elevate:

Did you know that last weekend was National Prescription Drug Take Back Day? There are more than 13,000 free drop boxes at stores, pharmacies, hospitals, and police stations across the country, but many people haven’t heard about them yet. That is why students at Canyon Hills High School designed a fridge magnet with a link to help people find the nearest drop box.

“Two out of three young people who misuse prescription drugs get them from their family’s medicine cabinet or from friends,” said Holly Kirkman, president of Club Elevated at Canyon Hills High. “If your pills are expired, or you don’t need them anymore you don’t have to wait for the next Take Back Day. Just put the leftovers in a drop box.”

Kirkman designed the magnet with a link for finding a nearby drop box ( http://bit.ly/rxdropboxnearme ).

Via Perlas of Club Elevated thinks some people might be reluctant to get rid of old medicine.

“I believe young people have a different view on disposing their meds than what older people think,” Perlas said. “However, if the meds are expired or not needed, there’s no point in having them around.”

There is another tool to help people find a convenient drop box.

The County’s Prescription Drug Abuse Task Force made an interactive map, which can be found at https://www.sandiegorxabusetaskforce.org/ . The map shows the location of year-round drop boxes and displays the address and phone number where a user can get more information.

Thank you Club ELEVATED for your continued prevention efforts in the Tierrasanta community! For more information about the ELEVATED program, please email Stacy Chiles at schiles@saysandiego.org

SENIORS

Do you have a Senior? Well, CHHS has a Booster Club so you can stay up to date on things and events about them:

The Canyon Hills/Serra Parent Class Boosters is a parent organization that supports your student's graduating class with activities and events not typically sponsored by the school. As your student approaches senior year, through fundraising and donations, this group helps offset the cost and implement activities like grad-night, prom, senior luncheon, graduation venue, powder-puff, and more.
